“Animals are such agreeable friends – they ask no questions; they pass no criticisms.” George Eliot
When I was little, I had a sticker on my bedframe that said, “Have you hugged your dog today?” Little did I know that at 10 years old, I was already learning how to cultivate well-being practices. Scrolling the first 10 pages of Google Scholar reveals 100’s of research papers published on well-being referencing the relationship of people to pets. I would not be surprised if there were 1000’s, but that’s only a guess. I don’t need to read all that research to know how much joy and happiness I have had over the years growing up with guinea pigs, mice, birds, cats, and dogs.
From the age of 8, our family dog was a stray labrador cross that my sister and I creatively called, Blackie as his fur was – you guessed it – black! Dad bought Mum a retired, singing yellow canary she named Oliver. After a couple more years, a stray cat came into our lives. We thought he was a Russian Blue, so we named him Khruschev (Dad chose the name this time). A year later, we found out he was an English Domestic Grey, but, by then, it was too late to rename him Churchill. Sadly, after 10 years of temptation, Khruschev ate Oliver, so we literally had a “cat who ate the canary”! It was very upsetting for us all, but especially Mum as you may well imagine.

Pets As Our Friends, Guides & Teachers
Fast forward to my life here in Canada, where, for the first 10 years of my relationship with Paul, we looked after other friends’ dogs. Then, in 2010 on ANZAC Day (April 26), we adopted ZuZu who was our 55 lb (25 kg) Golden-Doodle Fur Baby. I feel like she rescued us as much as we rescued her.
She was my friend, guide and teacher – helping me stay grounded, present and reminding me not to take myself too seriously. We still took care of other dogs while we had her too, so she had lots of canine companions. For clients who enjoyed dog energy, she would join us in my office for our in-person sessions too. ZuZu’s sweet little soul went over the Rainbow Bridge on May 8, 2023. I know that is the cycle of life, but her departure broke our hearts.

Your “Love Your Pet Day” Well-Being Practice.
Now, we continue to care for our friends’ dogs again. While we may not have our own full-time fur baby of our own, we have the delightful pleasure of canine care and love at least monthly and sometimes more often. This post is to send a big and heartfelt, thank you to all our animal creatures, big and small who help us choose well-being and bring joy and happiness into our hearts.
My final offering in honour of February 20 for this special day is to invite you to create your own, “Love Your Pet Day” well-being practice. Even if, like us, you have to borrow a pet! Give your “Love Your Pet Day” well-being practice a try and see what happens. At the very least, I hope you experience a moment of joy, calm, and ease in your life and career.
